First female umpire Eleni Glouftsis chats with Neil Mitchell on 3AW
She might have rated her first AFL match as ‘no more than a six or seven’ out of 10, but it’s hard to fault Eleni Glouftsis’ umpire diplomacy skills.
The game’s first female field umpire spoke with Neil Mitchell about her weekend experience and how it all came about.
No matter the question poised, Glouftsis had an answer.
She ‘wasn’t really’ happy with her game-opening bounce, but thought the rest of game went OK.
‘There were lots of things to learn out of the weekend and I can really take that into the season here in the VFL and try and run with that,’ she said on 3AW Mornings.
But the St. Bernard’s College school teacher said some of her Essendon-supporting students weren’t quite as kind!
‘There were a few mixed reviews,’ she said with a laugh.
‘Most were pretty happy, but there were a few Essendon supporters that thought I missed a couple of free kicks, but that’s fine!
‘They were all so supportive during the week.’
