‘Fight is on’ over prosecco name
The European Union is pushing for the name prosecco to be used exclusively for Italian bubby, in a move that has Australia’s $200 million industry up in arms.
Protection for the name is a key part of final negotiations for the Australia and EU free trade agreement.
Prosecco both a geographic region in Italy and was also formerly the name of the grape variety used to produce the wine.
Italy changed the name of the grape to Glera in 2009.
Wine journalist Laura Donadoni says “the fight is on”.
