The federal government has announced a new $900 million program aimed to help women flee abusive relationships.

Nine News national affairs editor, Andrew Probyn, says the program, which won’t be available until July next year, includes a $5000 package.

“This breaks down, about $1500 that would be a cash payment to allow that separation, and about three and a half thousand dollars in support payments,” he told Tony Jones, filling in for Jacqui Felgate.

He also points out the program doesn’t address the need for refuges.

“Especially in remote and regional places, where there’s little to no few places for women to go in trouble,” he said.
