Shadow minister for climate change and energy Ted O’Brien has addressed a discrepancy with the Coalition’s timeline for the introduction of nuclear energy.

The timeline the Coalition has for the introduction of nuclear energy is consistent with international averages despite the CSIRO claiming it would take twice the amount of time.

He also conceded to 3AW Drive Australians might be wary of nuclear due to its old reputation.

“The more and more Australians understand what is offered with nuclear technology, the more they embrace it,” he said.

Climate councillor and economist Nicki Hutley says on the Coalition’s own report, nuclear energy is four to five times more expensive than renewables.

“They say the difference between what they would do, and you’ve got to remember that renewables are still a big part of their system, is that they have to build a lot more of the renewables,” she said.

She’s also questioned, just based on the overwhelming cost, why Australia should pursue nuclear when there are cheaper alternatives already in use.
