Essendon chief addresses James Hird coaching speculation
Essendon chief Xavier Campbell says the Bombers have “got a coach” when asked whether the club would welcome James Hird back to lead the club.
Hird’s name has been linked with a possible return to the senior coaching ranks in recent weeks, with the Essendon great currently helping GWS interim Mark McVeigh on gameday.
Campbell was asked on 3AW whether Bombers would welcome Hird back as coach.
“We’ve got a coach and we are very comfortable and confident with our coach,” he said.
As for whether the club would entertain employing Hird as an assistant, given his history, Campbell said it would be a matter for the football department.
“They’re decisions for Josh (Mahoney) and Ben (Rutten) to work through as they position and resource their football program,” he said.
“I think we are very comfortable with our assistant coaches, too.”
