Bread Club

558 Queensberry Street, North Melbourne.

65 Cardigan Place, Albert Park

.

It’s hot cross bun season, actually this time, not just three days after Christmas when the supermarkets start stocking the shelves with them. I was told Bread Club was THE place to get hot cross buns from a hot cross bun obsessed friend of mine, shout out to Sam. As I approached the store it was clear they knew their niche, the LED sign on the front window showed as such with Hot XXX Buns illuminated, attracting their flock.  For a city that loves its bakeries, this place has somehow cracked the code. Bread Club isn’t a flash-in-the-pan pop-up; it’s become a local institution, and during Easter, it’s a must-visit.

You’ll find them at two locations: one on Queensberry St in North Melbourne and the other tucked away in Albert Park on Cardigan Place. But don’t let the subtlety fool you; step inside, and it’s a whole different story. The kind of bakery where you know everything on the shelf has been baked with love and care—and when those hot cross buns hit the table, it feels like you’ve walked into a bakery oasis.

At Bread Club, the décor doesn’t just scream “Instagrammable”; instead, it whispers “we’re serious about bread.” Picture bright white walls with minimalistic vibes, the occasional potted plant for that added touch of greenery, and the smell of fresh baking practically slapping you in the face the second you walk in. It’s clean, simple, and undeniably welcoming. This is where you’re meant to grab a coffee, snag a warm bun, and just settle in. Whether you’re walking out with a loaf or staying for a pastry, you feel like you’re getting more than just food here—you’re getting an experience.

But let’s talk about those hot cross buns. These little beauties are why people queue up—and trust me, it’s not just the seasonal hype. The spice blend is spot on. Cinnamon, nutmeg, a touch of clove—but never overpowering. There’s a delicate sweetness to them, but not cloying, and the real kicker? They’re fluffy. We’re talking next-level, melt-in-your-mouth softness, with just the right amount of golden, sticky glaze on top. The currants? Plump and juicy, like little bursts of fruit in every bite.

But let’s not stop at buns—this is a bakery with something for everyone. Their Vegemite Scroll (1 for $7.00) hits the perfect balance between salty and savory. It’s a perfect snack if you’re after something simple, yet satisfying. And if you’re after a sweet bite, their donuts (2 for $5.50 each, $11.00 total) are hard to resist. Soft, fluffy, and filled with more cream than pastry that will have you reaching for seconds (or thirds, if you’re lucky enough to snag another batch).

For something more indulgent, you can’t go past the Almond Croissant ($7.50). It’s flaky, buttery, and loaded with that unmistakable almond paste that gives it a rich, nutty flavor. Or, if you’re craving something a little different, the Croisscone ($6.50)—a hybrid of a croissant and scone—gives you the best of both worlds. It’s a buttery, flaky treat with the crumbly texture of a scone, which makes it totally unique and totally worth trying.

For those looking to load up for the week, grab a Mixed Pack of Hot XXX Buns (3 for $26.00). These buns will become your go-to for brunch, a quick snack, or even as a thoughtful gift for anyone who appreciates great bread. And if you’re after a hearty lunch, the Sausage Roll ($9.50) is a stand-out. This isn’t your average sausage roll; it’s packed with flavor, rich pastry, and a satisfying meaty filling that’s sure to hit the spot.

And let’s not forget the Egg, Meat & Vegemite Scroll ($10.50)—the perfect savory treat to brighten up your day. It’s hearty, comforting, and full of flavor, with the Vegemite adding that iconic salty kick.

The coffee, too, is worthy of a mention. It’s a solid brew, thanks to their partnership with local roasters. Their flat white pairs beautifully with the buns, and if you’re in the mood for something different, the iced coffee affogato is a playful way to balance the spice of the buns with something refreshing. Not to mention, it’s an excellent excuse to linger a bit longer in the cozy, laid-back vibe.

But back to the buns. If you haven’t had them yet, make this Easter the one where you experience the kind of hot cross buns that might just ruin all other hot cross buns for you. Warm, soft, spiced to perfection—Bread Club has redefined what it means to celebrate the season. In fact, every time you bite into one of these little pieces of heaven, you might just wonder if they’ve cracked some kind of ancient bakery code that makes their buns better than everyone else’s. They have, and it’s absolutely worth the trip.

For anyone in search of the perfect Easter treat — or just looking to see what the fuss is about—these buns are a seasonal rite of passage. And trust me, you’re going to want to be part of that line outside Bread Club this year.
