The Education Department has put the brakes on schools adopting accelerated programs for gifted students and warned against offering early enrolments to the best and brightest.

Schools have been told they must enrol all locals students first.

Pitsa Binnion, principal at McKinnon Secondary College, told Ross and John the concept was a ‘newish phenomenon.’

‘Everybody wants gifted children,’ she explained on 3AW Breakfast.

‘You want to be able to cater for everybody, but gifted children offer an opportunity for everybody to build their skills and knowledge.’
