An emotional Shane Martin says he’ll believe he’s allowed back in Australia once he gets on the plane.

The father of AFL superstar Dustin Martin appears to have won his bid to overturn his deportation to New Zealand after the federal government dropped its case.

He was deported Zealand on character grounds because of his links to Rebels bikies.

Speaking with Neil Mitchell, Shane Martin said he was “in tears” after hearing today’s news.

“I want to believe it … but until I’m on that plane,” he said.

Neil Mitchell said he felt sorry for the Martin family and government answers were required.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told 3AW in September Mr Martin was a “threat to Australia.”

It appears he no longer is in the eyes of the government.

“Geez that’s cruel,” Neil Mitchell said.

“If you’re going to deport him – so be it – stand by it.

“But for him to miss his son’s Brownlow, his premiership and Norm Smith … and now everything is OK and he’s allowed back? I think that’s cruel.

“He’s been robbed of one of the great moments of his life.”
