A cyclist is fighting for life after being hit by a car on Brunswick Street.

Police released details about the incident on April 3 on Saturday morning.

They said the 30-year-old man was riding along Brunswick Street, just before the Fitzroy Bowls Club, when he was hit by a black car about 3.15am.

The driver, who was believed to be the sole occupant of the vehicle, parked away from the scene before walking back to take a look at the injured cyclist and then driving away.

The car is described as a black hatchback Volkswagen.

The cyclist was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
