Doctors issue ‘warning’ in Health Of The Nation report
The “underfunding” of Victoria’s health sector has hit crisis point, according to the Victorian Chair of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP).
RACGP’s Health Of The Nation report has been released, and Neil Mitchell said it made for confronting reading.
Dr Anita Munoz said a number of issues needed addressing, with GPs likely to deal with the bulk of COVID patients moving forward, as well as a backlog of patients who had avoided visiting the doctor throughout the pandemic.
She said staff “burn out” was of real concern.
“And it’s rising,” she said.
“And probably most concerning is that there are fewer GPs that would recommend people enter the profession, the way it is currently set up.
“If we don’t heed this warning, within the foreseeable future, we are going to find our very noble profession, that does a huge amount for the community, is going to be lacking recruits and that is really going to stress patients and the health system.”
