A doctor who was floored by long COVID is urging Victorians to wear masks whenever possible and calling for a national “ambition” to do better when it comes to curbing the virus.

Dr Bronwyn King told Neil Mitchell she contracted COVID at the end of February.

She said it wasn’t a “particularly severe” case.

“After two weeks, I thought I was getting a bit better,” Dr King told Neil Mitchell.

“But it ended up that virtually every day I’d start the day and have a couple of hours being pretty good and functional and then, all of a sudden, I’d find myself back in bed at about 11am and would have to set my alarm to go and pick up my boys from school at 2.45 in the afternoon.

“I’d pick them up, get back home, and go to bed again.

“It just went on and on.”

Dr King is under 50 and described herself as fit and healthy.

“It really had an absolutely terrible effect on my ability to function,” she said.

Dr King said she was worried how many Australians were “flying blind” when it comes to the virus and getting re-infected several times.

“The ideal of number of times to get COVID is zero,” she said.
