Doctor stabbed by patient at Thomas Embling psychiatric hospital
A doctor has been stabbed by a patient at a high-security psychiatric hospital in Melbourne’s north.
3AW Drive received an off-air Word On The Street call about the attack, which occurred at Fairfield’s Thomas Embling Hospital around 10am on Tuesday morning
The Yarra Crime Investigation Unit confirmed they were looking into the incident.
Ambulance Victoria said it was called to the facility where paramedics found a woman had received minor injuries.
She was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a stable condition.
‘A serious incident occurred at Thomas Embling Hospital this morning which involved a patient assault on the psychiatrist working in the Jardine Unit,’ a Thomas Embling spokesperson said.
‘The psychiatrist activated the emergency response systems and the patient was safely detained within minutes without injury to other staff.
‘Steps have been taken to support staff and patients and ensure that the Jardine Unit is safe.
‘Forensicare is working with Victoria Police to enable the police to obtain the necessary court orders so that the patient can be formally interviewed as soon as possible.
‘These issues are taken extremely seriously by Forensicare and a detailed report on the assault will be prepared for the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist.’
The stabbing comes almost six years after another patient fatally stabbed two fellow inmates in the same unit at the facility.
