The average out of pocket cost of visiting a GP is soon expected to surge from about $40 to $52 as a result of a Victorian government move.

Tom Elliott says it’s “all about trying to repay its (Victoria’s) gargantuan debt”.

“What does that mean? Does that mean more people end up in hospital emergency wards, which really is robbing Peter to pay Paul because you overstress the emergency ward for things people should be going to the GP for, but you don’t go to the GP because the state government has made it more expensive?,” the 3AW Mornings host said.

General practitioner at MyClinic in Werribee Village, Dr Joe Garra, says it’s a “short-term cash grab” and it’ll cost the state government more in the long run.
