FIRST WITH NEIL MITCHELL

Significant division between rival tribes is slowing the progression of the African gang taskforce announced by Victoria Police more than six weeks ago.

Neil Mitchell said a message was received by members of Victoria Police over the weekend, indicating that the taskforce is still unchosen.

“I believe there is significant division in the Sudanese community between two tribes,” Neil said.

“One who mostly live in the south-east and another who mainly live in the west, their tension is historic.

“There is a problem if the community can’t get along well enough with each other to unite and fight thuggery on the streets.”

The Chief Commissioner admitted the taskforce has taken time to get up and running.

“No it’s not in full stride yet, it is working to some extent,” Mr Ashton said.

“There’s things to sort out because as you point out, there is politics within the community.”
