‘It’s wrong!’: Emotional caller takes aim at ‘special rules’ for the rich and famous
A distraught Victorian whose wife is dying from pancreatic cancer in hospital has taken aim at Novak Djokovic’s medical exemption to enter Victoria.
John told Heidi Murphy, filling in for Tom Elliott, he’s sick of “special rules for people who can play sports, who make lots of money, they’re famous”.
“They seem to get into our state and do this and I can’t see my bloody wife in hospital when she’s dying, and this is just so wrong,” he said in an emotional call.
“I’m just so angry with all these exceptions and rules and exclusions when I can’t go into hospital and see my wife. It’s wrong!”
Acting Premier Jacinta Allan says the decision to let Djokovic into the state was not a state government decision.
“The Commonwealth government processes have let the player into the country, the doctors have cleared him to play on a narrow range of medical exemptions,” she said.
Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley says Djokovic did not receive special treatment, and has been granted a medical exemption on “legitimate grounds”.
