Country footy President pays emotional tribute to fill-ins after record loss
Wahgunyah Football Club President Darryl Hore has paid an emotional tribute to his players and supporters after the club suffered a league record loss over the weekend.
The club, based in north-east Victoria, were beaten by a mammoth 431 points, going down to the top-of-the-ladder Beechworth in the Tallangatta & District Football League.
Wahgunyah had around 25 players missing due to COVID-19, and so had to rely on volunteers and reserve players to field a team.
“We still had new guys walking into the club on Thursday night, the support has been amazing,” Mr Hore told Neil Mitchell on 3AW Mornings.
“We forfeited our reserves, that was a given, but the reserves players we had left basically put their hand up and played anyway.
“The players have turned me into an emotional wreck this year.
“Just when I think they haven’t got anymore to give, they step-up and go a little bit more.”
