Tony Jones has weighed in on the controversial Welcome to Country ceremony before the AFL semi-final between GWS and Brisbane on Saturday night.

The ceremony was carried out by Brendan Kerin, and has since caused outrage on social media, with Tony Jones stating the ceremony was “counterproductive”.

“If this is all designed to sort of unify Australia, I think it’s creating division,” Jones said on 3AW Mornings.

Prominent Indigenous leader Warren Mundine then gave his thoughts on the speech from Saturday night, and stated Welcome to Country ceremonies have gone “overboard” now.

“I think it’s been done to death now, and I think it’s starting to lose its shine,” Mundine told Tony Jones on 3AW Mornings.
