Questions have been raised about just how much money is being spent staging Welcome to Country ceremonies.

Documents obtained from the federal opposition show over $450,000 has been spent on the ceremonies in the last two financial years.

Academic Commentator on Indigenous Affairs Anthony Dillon told Tony Jones says the money would be better spent making the lives of Indigenous people better.

“(The cost) is a bit (over the odds),” he said on 3AW Mornings.

“We know that money could be better spent to help indigenous people close the gap in areas they really do need help.

“We know from stories we’ve heard recently that people are getting a bit tired of Welcome to Country (ceremonies).”
