Concerns over ‘tent city’ growing near the Queen Victoria Market
Concerns have been raised over a rough sleeper ‘tent city’ which is growing near the Queen Victoria Market.
The Salvation Army’s Major Brendan Nottle says a nearby squat in an abandoned building was recently cleared and some of the people living there moved across the road.
“The problem we’ve got is there’s some people there that aren’t just homeless, they’re dealing with really complex mental health issues and hoarding is a massive issue, so they’re dragging in a whole heap of stuff and they’ve got it lined up along Franklin Street.”

The council cleaned up rubbish in the area on Tuesday, but Ken, who works at the Queen Victoria Market, says it’s already begun to accumulate again.
“It’s not good for the tourists and it wouldn’t be good for the market,” he told Neil Mitchell.
