The Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People in Victoria has denied claims of a “crisis” in the state’s youth justice system.

But Liana Buchanan says there is “no doubt” more needs to be done to improve the safety of staff.

It comes after 3AW Drive was alerted to several examples of staff at youth prisons being attacked, abused and threatened by inmates, which has led to them walking out on the sector and sparking staff shortages.

Liana Buchanan was asked whether government was listening to their concerns.

“The government is on a journey – it’s a slower journey than I’d like,” she told Tom Elliott on Tuesday.
