Children’s author weighs in on Enid Blyton book edits

The work of another children’s author has been quietly edited to suit modern standards.

“Shut up”, “don’t be an ass” and “don’t be an idiot” are among phrases cut from Enid Blyton books in recent edits.

It comes after 16 Roald Dahl books underwent similar changes in new editions.

Children’s author Wai Chim supports the changes, which she says keep the books relevant for modern audiences.

“I think the worse thing that would happen is you don’t make changes and the stories kind of wither away, they lose relevance and they die out, and then they’re no longer read,” she told Tony Jones, filling in for Neil Mitchell.

“I think it would be very naïve to think what writers write just goes out there. It’s interpreted within the context.”
