Children in Melbourne deprived of ‘basic right’ to roam says expert
International research has found Melbourne’s infrastructure poorly accommodates cyclists and pedestrians, in turn leaving children especially excluded.
Chair of the Urban Mobility Futures at Amsterdam University, Professor Marco te Brömmelstroet, says Melbourne’s car dependent streets are depriving children of the ability to ‘roam’.
“The science is very clear that this lack of autonomy that children increasingly feel in cities like Melbourne is directly related to the mental health crisis,” he told Neil Mitchell.
