Chapel Street has been shut in both directions after a suspicious fire broken out at a nightclub overnight.

The LUX nightclub was set ablaze at around 1:45am, with callers to 3AW reporting seeing multiple people in balaclavas shortly before the attack.

3AW Breakfast’s Ross Stevenson reported that the alleged offenders jumped out of a car and threw petrol in the two-story building, setting it ablaze.

Acting Assistant Chief Fire Officer Mitch Simons had the latest from the scene, saying the building was significantly damaged as a result of the blaze.

“It’s a complete rebuild (of the building),” he told Ross and Ross.

“Fire engulfed the whole area of the nightclub and through the roof.”
