Captain Cook statue and Cooks’ Cottage targeted by vandals overnight

Almost a year to the day since the statue of Captain Cook was toppled in Fitzroy Gardens, vandals have again attacked overnight.
It was reinstalled earlier this month, and overnight, vandals spray-painted various slogans over Cooks’ Cottage and attempted to removed the head of the statue, which is still standing.

The cottage has been defaced with what appears to be various anti-Cook comments, but it appears attending police have cleaned it up since the media outlets arrived.
Ms Burke told Ross and Russel the damage is minimal with a slight cut to the side of the statue.
“There’s also a slight smell of chemicals in the air,” she said on 3AW Breakfast.
