Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton says his colleagues were attacked during violent protests on the streets of Melbourne, slamming the offenders as a “bunch of hypocrites.”

Over 1,000 demonstrators gathered in the city to protest a Land Force expo being held at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre, with police later releasing a statement saying they were “appalled” with some of the behaviour at the protest.

Mr Patton told Heidi Murphy after arresting 33 people, they were shocked at the scenes which took place on Wednesday.

“I’m appalled at the behaviour of a large number of protestors,” he said on 3AW Drive.

“For a group that says they’re anti-war and presuming that makes them anti-violence, that makes them a bunch of hypocrites…it’s an attack on my officers.”

Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt also joined Heidi Murphy, labelling the violent protestors “filthy disgusting animals”.
