Blogger Kieran Bennett rejects crime wave, blames ‘racist panic’ for disaffected youth
A blogger and political activist who wrote an article in defence of the Apex gang says the Sudanese community is ‘under attack’ and alienated youth need support and understanding.
Kieran Bennett says there is a ‘racist panic’ around Melbourne’s crime wave.
‘What we call the Apex gang probably doesn’t exist how we understand it,’ he told Neil Mitchell.
‘A lot of the narrative being pushed around the Apex gang basically ties into racist demonisation of migrant communities and we should object to that.’
He said the so-called crime wave was ‘small numbers of violent incidents’.
‘The reality of what’s going on is that we have outer suburban communities with high rates of unemployment, fairly standard rates of crime, alienated youth that need our support and understanding.’
