There’s been a growing chorus of support for the Australian Ibis, affectionately known as the “bin chicken”, to be made the official mascot of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games.

It was put on the agenda by a Queensland minister, who said he had a soft touch for divisive bird.

National Public Affairs Manager for BirdLife Australia, Sean Dooley, told Tony Jones it would be a worth candidate

“The Ibis is a much-maligned beast,” he said on 3AW Drive.

“They’re kind of an Aussie battler really, they’re pretty unique, pretty weird looking, not necessarily conventionally handsome.

“But they are true-blue Aussie, and like a lot of Aussies they’ve had to move and adapt.”
