Sports doctor Dr Peter Larkins says Sam Draper faces a long recovery after suffering a season-ending achilles injury on Friday.

The Essendon ruckman is set to have surgery after going down in the last quarter of the Bombers’ win over West Coast in Perth.

Dr Larkins told 3AW Football Draper faced a 12-month recovery time, but forecast it could be even longer.

“We don’t see that (type of injury) very often,” he said.

“It’s been confirmed by the Bombers it’s a full rupture, we always say 12 months recovery. It’s a big injury for a footballer.”
