Bali’s status as Australia’s favourite holiday spot is under threat due to new controversial laws.

Indonesia’s parliament has approved legislation which would outlaw sex outside marriage and cohabitation by unmarried couples.

Director of the Griffith Institute of Tourism, Dr Sarah Gardiner, says “people are pretty unsure of what this actually means in terms of international travel to Bali moving forward”.

Under the laws, extramarital sex would carry punishment of up to one year in jail.

But Dr Gardiner says the laws may be less severe than they sound.

“There’s a lot of conversations at the moment around unmarried couples travelling to Bali but I think when we delve a bit deeper it may not be as horrific as we thought,” she told Ross and Russel.

The new criminal code is set to take effect in three years.
