Australians got drunk more in 2020 than residents in any other country, a new international survey has found.

While Australians who participated in the Global Drug Survey drank on about the average number of days in 2020 – two days per week – the number of days they reported getting drunk was far above the international average.

Australians reported getting drunk 27 times throughout the year, well above the global average of 15.

Vice-chancellor senior research fellow in the Social & Global Studies Centre at RMIT University, Dr Monica Barratt, says “Victoria certainly had a different 2020 to the rest of Australia”.

While Victorians were locked down for much of 2020, the rest of the country was able to socialise, and that may have contributed to Australia’s high drinking rate.

Denmark and Sweden were the next highest countries for drunken episodes, with residens there reporting getting drunk 23.8 times in 2020.
