RUMOUR CONFIRMED

Australian hospitality venues are embarking on massive overseas hiring campaigns in a bid to attract skilled international workers.

On Wednesday, the Rumour File heard the company behind Rockpool, Spice Temple, Munich Brauhaus and The Barvarian had sent representatives overseas to hire 180 staff and paying airfares, visas and the first month of accommodation for the new recruits.

It’s today been confirmed the parent company has hired 125 international workers from the Middle East, Europe and the United States.

CEO of Restaurant and Catering Australia, Wes Lambert, says many other companies are doing the same.

“They’re going overseas, they’re actually recruiting directly from overseas,” he told Ross and Russel.

But Mr Lambert says international recruitment isn’t a perfect solution for Australian hospitality operators.

“With visa approval times woefully long it has just exacerbated the workforce shortage in hospitality in Victoria, where there are over 28,000 jobs available,” he said.

“We are certainly calling upon the government to get them here faster.”
