The national director of the Australian Republic Movement admits he was ‘disappointed’ Anthony Albanese didn’t make an explicit commitment to hold a referendum on Australia becoming a republic when asked about the matter on the ABC, but said Labor prioritising a referendum to create an Indigenous Voice to Parliament would not impact their own cause.

Mr Albanese said that was a priority for his party when asked whether he’d support a referendum on Q&A.

It means it’s no longer likely the republic issue would be raised in Labor’s first term, should the party win government, as previously committed.

Sandy Biar, CEO and National Director of the Australian Republic Movement, told Tom Elliott it was still Labor party policy.

“We don’t see them (causes) as competing in any way, shape, or form,” he said.
