An Australian living in Florida has spoken to 3AW just hours before the category 5 storm hits as parts of the US braces for one of the biggest hurricanes in recent memory.

Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall in Florida in the coming days, with over five million people told to evacuate the area.

One of those people is Australian Lisa Fremder – who lives in Orlando – and she told Jacqui Felgate that petrol was running out and power was expected to be cut when the storm hits.

“They’re about to close the airport in a few hours,” she said on 3AW Drive.

“We drove around trying to find fuel and all the petrol stations were empty.”
