The Australian Electoral Commission is warning social media giants to swiftly remove false or misleading information in the lead-up to the federal election.

It’s part of a campaign to crackdown on misinformation online.

But Tom Elliott has questioned the practicality of such a crackdown, wondering how every piece of false information online could be stopped.

“That’s the million dollar question,” Chris Cooper, Executive Director of Reset Australia, told Tom Elliott.

Mr Cooper said it appeared the crackdown would focus on posts about candidates withdrawing, or where to vote.

“Something that is going to interfere with somebody actually going and voting and that realm is much more clear cut,” he said.
