Australian cricketer Steve Smith has been jeered by the crowd as he went out to bat on day four of the Third Test in South Africa, after admitting his involvement in a ball tampering plot.

Smith later copped a one-Test ban from the International Cricket Council, but faces further sanction from Cricket Australia.

The governing body is under immense pressure from fans and former cricketers to sack Smith as captain altogether.

Smith and Dave Warner stood down as captain and vice-captain for the remainder of the Third Test, which Australia went on to comprehensively lose overnight.

Opening batter Cameron Bancroft, who was caught on camera using tape to scuff the ball, escaped suspension.

Tim Paine assumed captaincy duties for the remainder of the Third Test.

Australia was dismissed for a miserly 107 runs in their second innings overnight, with Smith dismissed cheaply for 7 runs.

Warner top-scored with 32 while Paine was unbeaten on 9.
