‘Anything could happen’: 3AW caller details terrifying experience with Uber driver

A woman has detailed a terrifying experience with an Uber driver after she was left stranded by the side of the road.
Mary told 3AW Mornings the driver claimed the PIN she had given him wasn’t working, and had refused to drop her off back at the airport.
“He kept telling me ‘oh, it doesn’t work, you need to pay me’, and all this time we’re driving, and I said ‘well, no, I already paid Uber,” she said.

She added Uber’s customer service told her the next day they couldn’t identify the driver, and to make sure she matched the registration to the app.
“But you can’t do that with the PIN system … anyone can get into a car thinking they’re getting into an Uber car, if he’s not registering that PIN number, he could take you anywhere, and anything could happen,” she said.
Melbourne Airport spokesperson Andrew Lund has urged travellers to be careful and ensure they’re getting into an Uber.
“Certainly it is an issue for us and we’re working with Transport Safety Victoria to crack down on some of that behaviour because it hasn’t been great across both taxis and Ubers unfortunately,” he said.
