Animal Justice Party candidate Chris Delforce joined vegan activists protesting the sale of pig products at the Coles supermarket on Spencer street on Saturday.

The protestors went to the meat aisle, wearing TVs on their chest, and showed vision of a pig farm which they say supply the supermarket giant.

Mr Delforce said the protest was “peaceful” and “non-confrontational” and only lasted around 15 minutes.

“Shoppers weren’t prevented from shopping and weren’t directly engaged with,” he said on 3AW Mornings.

“This was just about raising awareness of how pigs are farmed in Australia, I think it’s something a lot of people don’t know anything about.

However Neil Mitchell argued that it was inappropriate to show such imagery with children around.

Neil Mitchell: You don’t want to be showing young children photographs of pigs being mistreated, that’s not good for the kids, that’s disturbing and distressing for the children.

Chris Delforce: Yeah that’s right, they very briefly see it.

Neil Mitchell: Even that, why? Just leave the kids out of it, leave the public out of it, do it somewhere else.

Chris Delforce: The public are who need to see this, the public are the ones that are actually funding this and who are unaware of it. They’re being misled into viewing cages are things of the past and, they believe that animals are somehow treated humanely and compassionately in our farming system when there’s so much evidence to the contrary.
