‘An absolute disgrace’ | St Kilda beach trashed as Christmas party spirals out of control
The St Kilda foreshore has been left trashed following an out-of-control Christmas party, with the clean-up bill costing ratepayers almost $20,000.
About 5000 people flocked to the foreshore, with many drinking to excess.
Drunk revellers spilled onto nearby streets, forcing temporary road closures.
A 27-year-old man was taken to hospital after he was hit by a tram. A woman had to be taken to hospital to have her stomach pumped.
Police are investigating a minor assault and arrested two people for being drunk in public.
The group’s massive mess was left for council workers to clear, at a cost of roughly $18,000.
“It’s an absolute disgrace,” Port Phillip mayor Bernadene Voss told 3AW Mornings.
She said most of those involved were backpackers.
Labor MP Martin Foley is among those calling for a permanent ban on drinking on the foreshore, with council to consider its options.
