AMWU applies to protect casual employees
The Manufacturers’ Union has applied to the Fair Work Commission to protect casual employees.
Assistant secretary of the AMWU Glenn Thompson told Tom Elliott the proposal would see casuals become permanent employees after a set period in the job.
Currently, casual workers can apply to their employer to be made permanent after six months, however 88% of those requests are denied.
‘We’re concerned the system is broke, and simply being used to exploit vulnerable workers,’ Mr Thompson said.
