A prospector has made a fascinating discovery in a Daylesford creek bed.

Oscar Vastag found a 586 grams piece of rock earlier this month which he believed was a meteorite.

He went back to the site of the find today and found more than a dozen other similar rocks.

“They could be three or four kilos, some of them,” he told Neil Mitchell.

3AW Mornings asked physicist Dr Gail Iles for her opinion on whether the initial object found (above) was a meteorite.

Dr Gail Iles examines the Daylesford creek bed discovery!

Thorough as ever, Dr Iles put together a slideshow analysing the object. If you think you’ve found a meteorite, take a look at the slideshow on how to identify one (below).

Dr Iles’s slideshow concluded the object was “maybe” a meteorite.

But after hearing from Mr Vastag that it was magnetic, Dr Iles said there’s “a very high possibility” it is indeed a meteorite.

“My immediate instinct is to get this analysed … then we can answer the question once and for all — is it definitely a meteorite? And if it is, then the investigation begins. Where did it come from? How old is it? Where did it form? How far has it travelled to get here?,” she said.

The rock will be analysed at the synchrotron in Clayton.
