Australia is running dangerously low on a diesel exhaust fluid needed to keep the nation’s trucks on the roads.

Without AdBlue, an additive which filters carbon and reduces emissions, diesel trucks can’t run for long.

But a key component of the additive, urea, is in short supply due to China halting exports.

CEO of the Victorian Transport Association, Peter Anderson, says it’s “an important ingredient for the truck to be able to operate”.

“We’re desperate to get this product and we just can’t get it.

“It’s urea that we really need, and China has put a hold on that urea … to try and up the price worldwide.

“They supply about 50 per cent of the refined urea around the world.”
