Australia’s acting Prime Minister has promised to give Victoria its “fair share” of infrastructure funding, but has refused to be pinned down on exactly how much the new federal government will tip into Melbourne’s Surbuban Rail Loop project.

Funding for Daniel Andrews’ signature infrastructure project was a key commitment in the weeks leading up to the election.

“They’ve made a commitment for $2.2 billion – the wording is very clear, at least $2.2 billion,” the Victorian premier said on Tuesday.

But Richard Marles told Neil Mitchell the matter still needed working through.

“We want to make sure that Victoria gets its fair share, because under the former government it had not,” he said.
