Academic’s bizarre bread comment on the ABC leaves dietitian stunned
A Sydney academic has been called into question over a bizarre comment on the ABC where she said Scott Morrison’s admission he ate white bread showed a “deep lack of understanding” about Australia, linking white bread to “Anglo men” and brown bread to the “healthy” working class.
A dietitian has since told 3AW it was the “strangest thing” she’d ever heard, also quashing claims brown bread was the healthiest option.
Nareen Young, who is Professor for Indigenous Policy at the University of Technology Sydney, made the comment about Mr Morrison on the ABC’s The Drum program.
“We had brown bread because we were healthy. I think it shows a deep lack of understanding about who works in this country,” she said.
Dietitian Susie Burrell told Tom Elliott she didn’t understand where Ms Young was coming from, pointing out white bread was often cheaper than brown or grain.
“It’s the strangest thing I’ve ever heard,” she said.
Ms Burrell said multigrain bread was the “healthiest by far” when it come to bread types.
