The Victorian Upper House has taken the unprecedented step of suspending a government MP for six months.

Gavin Jennings is the Premier’s right-hand man and the leader of the government in the upper house.

He’s been suspended for six months for failing to produce dozens of documents requested by the opposition and the Greens.

They relate to projects including Peter MacCallum Private and the Formula 1 Grand Prix.

The government had argued the documents were guarded by executive privilege and should not be made public.

But after weeks of debate, a motion to suspend was passed.

It will take effect from next sitting week, unless the government can provide documents by then.
