12 Apostles cash splash
A $9.8 million upgrade to Victoria’s iconic tourist attractions on the Shipwreck coast is expected to increase visitation and boost the local economy.
The Shipwreck coast is a 28km stretch taking in the Twelve Apostles, Port Campbell and the Blowhole.
2.6 million people visit the region each year making it Victoria’s number one tourist destination.
But the average visitor stays less than 40 minutes and spends just 18 cents.
The Andrews Government on Saturday announced $9.8 million dollars will be spent improving the visitor experience to encourage longer stays and increase spending.
New lookouts will be built at the Twelve Apostles and the Blowhole.
There will be a pedestrian bridge over Campbell’s Creek and WiFi technology installed to enable a digital experience at the Twelve Apostles.
The project is the first stage of the Shipwreck Coast master plan and will create 120 new jobs.
‘The Shipwreck Coast in an international tourist destination and this investment will help strengthen the local economy through sustainable tourism,’ Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said.
‘It sends a clear signal that local communities impacted by the 2015 Christmas Day bushfires are open for business.’
