‘Matthews Minute’ doesn’t disappoint
There’s been two main talking points this week in the AFL world.
Leigh Matthews has quite a strong opinion on both. So Sports Today introduced a segment called the ‘Matthews Minute’, which gave the AFL legend a platform for his thoughts.
Firstly, the head high tackling debate…
‘My philosophy has been torn apart this week,’ said Matthews.
‘Life’s a contest between good and evil and footy is a contest between the ball getter and tackler. The ball getter’s the good, the tackler is the evil.’
With an analogy like that, no wonder he’s regarded as one of the all time great coaches.
Matthews wrapped it up by making it quite clear he is always barracking for the ball winner, not the ‘evil’ tackler.
‘We should just be saying ‘tackle properly!”
As for the other issue, tanking… Matthews suggests the football world is overly paranoid about the concept.
‘The ridiculous paranoia about tanking… Players try 100% of the time. It would be one in a million the coach isn’t trying.’
‘But we’re so paranoid abut tanking, that we want to change the draft system!’
