Decision makers appear to be at odds over a multi-million dollar transformation of the Queen Victoria Market.

State planning minister Richard Wynne has raised ‘serious concerns’ about the proposal, which is set to see the market’s busy fruit and vegetable stalls shifted and replaced with restaurants and take away stalls.

Some of the heritage sheds were due to be demolished and then reinstated.

But Mr Wynne told The Age ‘serious hurdles remain in relation to the historic preservation of the market’.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle told 3AW Breakfast he was caught off guard by the minister’s reaction.

‘It’s a bit of a surprise to me, given we actually have a contract with the government with $10 million penalties if we don’t deliver,’ he said.
