Caroline O’Connor is scrutinising a film offer. The theatre legend is back in Melbourne for The Production Company’s Funny Girl at the Arts Centre. After stepping off stage on opening night, she told me, ‘I feel really honoured to be asked to come back to Melbourne to play Fanny Brice.’ She also revealed, ‘I don’t want to leave Australia permanently, no way. But I’m being offered more and more work overseas and I didn’t think that would happen at this stage of my career but it is, especially in New York.’ O’Connor revealed she’s said yes to ‘doing a reading of a new film.’

She’s been invited to do a one night only Cabaret show at the St James Theatre on the West End and, needless to say and rightly so, is thrilled to bits. ‘The last time I was there was for Hot Shoe Shuffle. I’ve always kept my British equity and now that Lexie (her daughter) is all grown up?.’

For the first time at a Summer Olympic Games, Australia will be represented by more women than men, with the addition of a women’s eight rowing crew – the team will grow to 419 athletes ? 212 women and 207 men. Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller said today, ‘Gender balance has been something that has been incredibly important in the Olympic movement, and particularly to Australia.’
