Prescription drugs are killing Australians at a record rate, with older people and those in regional areas and men most at risk.

New data from the Penington Institute shows nearly eight in ten accidental overdose deaths relate to people aged 30 to 59 using prescription painkillers.

Institute CEO John Ryan says most overdose deaths are caused by legal drugs.

‘It can affect people from all walks in life. From very wealthy to very poor.’

‘It can also affect men and women, it is mostly, 70% men affected’ – Mr Ryan told 3AW Breakfast.
