The AFL is offering 10 traineeships for young Muslims to work across the AFL industry over a 12 month period.

The traineeships, based in Queensland, are part of the Bachar Houli Employment Program.

Former head of diversity at the AFL, Jason Mifsud, welcomed the move saying it would go some way to address the ‘systemic challenges’ facing Muslims in the workplace.

‘This is clearly a pathway program that they’ve seen fit to invest in to facilitate that opportunity for young Muslim employees,’ he said.

‘I think institutions or companies who see fit to facilitate pathways into broader opportunities in the workplace should be supported and encouraged, and that’s clearly what the AFL has taken the decision to do at this time.’

But Tom Elliott said he didn’t like jobs being advertised for anyone of a particular religion, race, ethnicity or cultural background.
